Alstom Secures €2 Billion Deal to Modernize MTA's Commuter Train Fleet in New York

Alstom Signs €2 Billion Contract to Supply Modern M-9A Trains for New York MTA

Alstom, a global leader in sustainable mobility solutions, has announced the award of a €2.0 billion (approximately $2.3 billion) contract to produce 316 advanced M-9A commuter train cars for the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority's (MTA) Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) and Metro-North Railroad lines. This significant contract includes an option for an additional 242 cars, potentially raising the total value by €1.3 billion ($1.5 billion).

Modernizing New York's Commuter Transit

The new M-9A train cars will replace the 40-year-old M-3 models, currently the oldest trains in service on the suburban lines. Designed for improved comfort, these cars will offer passengers a quieter, more reliable ride, equipped with USB ports, wheelchair spaces, and accessible restrooms. Additionally, extra-wide doors on each side will help ensure efficient boarding and disembarking for all riders.

Manufacturing and Economic Impact

Production will take place at Alstom's facilities in upstate New York, creating nearly 300 new jobs, many filled by members of the International Association of Machinists (IAM). This reflects Alstom’s ongoing commitment to supporting the local economy, with significant investments already made in their Hornell site and across the state.

Local and State Leaders Applaud the Contract

Several political leaders, including Senator Chuck Schumer and Senator Kristin Gillibrand, have praised the agreement for its economic and community benefits. They highlighted the project's role in revitalizing manufacturing, supporting hundreds of well-paying jobs, and modernizing New York’s critical public transportation infrastructure.

Hope Knight, CEO of Empire State Development, emphasized that the deal is a testament to strategic investments in local manufacturing. The region’s strong tradition in railcar production will continue, further establishing New York as a national leader in rail manufacturing.

Supporting New York Communities

Around half of the new train cars (160) will go to the LIRR, which serves Long Island and is the busiest commuter line in the US. The remaining 156 cars will service the Metro-North Railroad, connecting northern New York and parts of Connecticut. Alstom has already delivered about 5,400 commuter and subway cars to the MTA to date.

The new M-9A units will include state-of-the-art cybersecurity features to safeguard onboard systems and communications. All vehicles will be electric multiple units (EMU), requiring no locomotive, and will be capable of operating on electrified tracks.

Alstom’s Heritage and Commitment

Alstom maintains a strong presence in New York, with offices in Rochester and Manhattan, prominent manufacturing facilities in Hornell and Plattsburgh, and a maintenance site in Kanona. The Hornell facility, a rail manufacturing powerhouse for 170 years, stands as the largest such plant in the US.

The M-9A cars are part of Alstom’s Adessia family of commuter trains, recognized worldwide for their performance, sustainability, and passenger comfort. Alstom’s Adessia trains operate in over 15 countries, carrying more than 20 million passengers daily.

Broader Reach in the US Rail Sector

Across the US, Alstom remains a leading supplier of new and refurbished rail vehicles, including cutting-edge fleets for Amtrak and automated airport shuttles at 15 major airports nationwide.
